Book Reviews: Indian Mythological Fiction

A Good Month…

This has been a good month as I was able to tick off a couple of items from my ‘To-Read’ list. I completed 2 books over the last week.

  1. Saraswati’s Gift – Kavita Kane
  2. Valmiki’s Women – Anand Neelkanthan

Saraswati’s Gift – Kavita Kane

Created in Kavita’s trademark style, this book gave a peek into the lesser-known world of Saraswati. We understand her to be the goddess of knowledge, arts and music; and even as she is worshipped as a female force, one might also not be aware that she was not an ardent fan of the concept of marriage and motherhood. The book explores her relationship with her Creator, Brahma, and the most unusual union of two fiercely independent minds.

What I love the most about her writing is the fact that she makes her characters and the events so real and relatable. As a one-book-old author myself, I am highly inspired by her effortless storytelling.

Eagerly awaiting for her next book…

Valmiki’s Women – Anand Neelkanthan

The book was a different kind of read altogether.  The characters portrayed here, whether it is Shanta, Dhashrath, Kaikei, Manthara, Meenakshi (Surpanakha) or Tataka, have been given a human touch. These five short stories explore the ambition, love (sometimes misguided), devotion and courage of these leading ladies, who have been permanently marked as antagonists in our ancient scriptures.

This book sheds light on the fact that when someone’s good they are not all good, and when someone is bad they are not all evil. Every human being has both good and bad in them. There is no black or white when it comes to human emotions, we are all grey. Some are darker shades of grey, while others are lighter shades.
